Manuscript and Editing Rules Manual
1. Principles Concerning Review and Publication of Manuscripts
1) This academic journal shall regularly be published in English on Feb. 15 and Sep. 15.
2) Contributed manuscripts shall be examined by two persons elected from the Steering Committee, and shall be published if these two persons consider it proper. In case of disagreement on whether the manuscript should be published or not, the decision shall be taken relying on the consideration of a third person.
3) As a general rule, manuscripts will not be returned. If necessary, an agreement about modification or supplementation concerning the contents of the submitted manuscript can be reached.
2. Main Principles Concerning Contributions
1) Manuscripts shall conform to standards as outlined in “A Manual on the Manuscripts” for the International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Culture which is based on the Manual of Chicago Style.
2) On the first page of the manuscript, the following essential data shall be written down: the title of the manuscript, author's full name, engaged institution, position, address and phone number, e-mail address. From the second page on, one shall write the title of the treatise and proceed to the main subject.
3. Manuscript Writing
1) Manuscripts shall be composed on a word processor not less than Hangul 2004 or MS-Word 2002. The full text in English, shall be submitted in the form of 3 printouts, together with diskette or via e-mail.
2) The author of the manuscript shall write his name in Roman characters.
3) The material will be accompanied by an abstract (10 lines), and a list of up to 7 key words, and by the author's CV, a list of main publications.
4) Quantity of contribution: The manuscript in English shall be 32 lines in length and contain up to 15 pages, bibliography included. The maximum of 20 pages shall not be exceeded.
4. Numbering Titles
1st phase: I, II, III …
2nd phase: 1, 2, 3 …
3rd phase: A, B, C …
4th phase: (1), (2), (3) …
5th phase: (A), (B), (C) …
5. Quotations
Short quotations shall be adduced in the main text. Long quotations (more than 3 lines) shall be separated from the main text. In that case, one line should be left empty beneath and above the main text, and marginal indication of 3 letters should be left empty on the left and on the right.
6. Footnotes
1) Footnotes shall be used.
2) If using footnotes, a serial number shall be given in the upper end of a phrase or term and the content of the footnote shall be inserted at the bottom of the same page.
7. Bibliography Quoted in the Main Texts
1) When quoting a book or an author in the main text, the year of publication and/or the page shall be put in parentheses. Example:
(Hong 1995).... document of 1995.
(Hong 1995: 25-28).... document of 1995, pages 25-28.
2) If the quoted book or author doesn't appear in the main text, author and year of publication shall be put in parentheses at the end of the corresponding part. If various documents are quoted in the same context, they shall be separated by a semicolon. Example:
According to a study (Hong 1995).
According to most recent studies (Hong 1995; Anderson 1993).
3) If the author is a collegium not exceeding 3 persons, all their names shall be mentioned. If more than 4 persons are involved, only the first author shall be mentioned, followed by et al. in English.
Example: Wittrock et al. (1990).
8. References
The end of the manuscript shall be framed as follows. If works from different countries have been referred to, they shall be enumerated in the order of Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Western books. The framing of Western bibliography not illustrated here shall be modeled after the AAR system.
1) Separate volume
Example: Hong, Gil-Dong(1990). The Orientation of and History Buddhist Education: Seoul: Bultasa (or Pult'asa), 15-16.
2) Articles inserted in periodical publication
Example: Hong, Gil-Dong(1991). “Studies on parental education program for babies.” Studies on Baby Education 29/4.
* 29(4) means the 4th number of volume 29.
3) Thesis for a degree
Example: Baek, Uk-hyon(1992). Studies on the selective attention of children. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, Chungnam University.
4) When framing a reference bibliography in English, the title of the book and foreign language such as Sanskrit or Chinese shall be written in italics.
9. Diagrams and Illustrations
1) A serial number shall be given to diagrams and illustrations, and < > parentheses shall be used.
Example: <diagram no.1>, <illustration no.1>.
2) Diagrams shall be titled on the top, illustrations on the lower column.
3) Diagrams and illustrations shall be clearly drawn in order to allow a reprint of the original text.
10. Abbreviations
1) A sign of Citation for important terms and phrases in the main paper which are not a content citation should be abbreviated as “ ”. In the sign of “ ” important terms and phase or dialogue should be abbreviated as ‘ ’.
2) A content citation uses a 9 point letter. No abbreviation sign for a citation is accepted except the above abbreviations.
11. Transliteration
1) English transliteration for Korean characters follows the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Korea System or the McCune-Reischauer System.
2) English transliteration for Chinese characters follows the Wade System.
Example: Chang-an / Ch'ang-an 長安.
3) English transliteration for Japanese characters follows the Ministry of Education of Japan System.
