Bylaws of the IABTC:
Article 1. (Name)
The name of this Association shall be "International Association for Buddhist Thought &Culture." (Referred to hereinafter as IABTC, or the association)
Article 2. (Object)
The object of the Association shall be to promote the academic development of the history of Buddhist thought and culture and globalization of Korean Buddhism, centering primarily on wide-ranging research in cooperation with other academic fields and international exchange of academic information.
Article 3. (Activities)
The Association shall, with a view to attaining its object, engage in the following forms of activities :
1. Research activities, seminars and lectures related to the history of Buddhist thought & culture
2. Publication of an English journal and research texts.
3. Scholarly exchange with other international organizations for Buddhism.
4. Translation of Korean classical texts on Buddhism.
5. Activities to promote the globalization of Korean Buddhism.
6. Other activities deemed necessary for the accomplishment of the Association's object.
Article 4. (Office)
The office of the Association shall be located in Seoul, Korea and if necessary, branches may be established elsewhere as designated by the President.
Article 5. (Officers)
The officers of the Association shall be as follow :
1. One(1) President
2. Presidents of Several regional centers
3. Not more than four(4) Vice-president
4. Not more than ten(10) Executive Directors
5. Not more than fifty(50) Directors
6. Two(2) Auditors
7. Several Senior Advisors and Advisors.
Article 6. (Election and Terms of Office of Officers)
The President and auditors shall be elected by a majority of votes of those present at the General Meeting and President may appoint all other officers. The terms of President shall be 4 years and the other officers terms shall be two years.
Article 7. (Duties of President)
The President shall represent the Association and control the overall direction of the Association. The Vice-president shall assist the President and in the absence the President, a Vice President will act for the President according to seniority.
Article 8. (Duties of Executive Director)
The Executive Directors shall conduct the business entrusted by the Board of Directors.
1. The General Affairs Director shall be responsible for the general affairs and finances.
2. The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for publicity of the organization and international cooperation.
3. The Editorial Director shall be responsible for publications by the organization.
4. The Research Director shall be responsible for planning and coordinating research activities in each committee
5. The International Relations Director shall be responsible for the international seminar and international exchange of academic information.
6. The Education Director shall be responsible for the international education and dissemination of Buddhism.
Article 9. (Duties of Officers)
The officers shall attend meetings of the Board of Directors and deliberate and decide the affairs of the Association. The auditor shall audit the accounts and assets of the Association and may attend, and state their opinions at meetings of the Board of Directors.
Article 10. (Matters to be decided by Board of Directors)
Matters to be decided by the Board of Directors shall be as follows:
1. Matters concerning implementation of business.
2. Matters concerning business plan and operation.
3. Matters concerning budget and settlement of accounts.
4. Matters delegated by the General Meeting.
5. Other important matters concerning the administration of the Association.
Article 11. (Board of directors)
1. The Board of Directors shall consist of the President, Vice President and directors.
2. The President shall convene and preside over the meetings of the Board of Directors.
3. Half of the Board members shall constitute a quorum and all decisions of the Board shall be by a majority of those present.
Article 12. (Secretariat)
1. The Association may have a Secretariat and necessary staff personnel.
2. The President shall appoint the secretary. The secretary shall conduct
business on the instructions of the General Affairs Director.
3. Researchers and assistants may be employed to assist the secretary.
Article 13. (Types of Membership)
Persons supporting the purpose of this Association and wishing to adhere to it
shall be its members. Members shall be classified as follows :
1. Common member: Holder of at least a Master's Degree in a field of study related to Buddhism.
2. Honorary member: Person or group of high contribution to the development
of the Association, having been selected by the Board of Directors.
3. Associate member: erson who is not eligible for Common membership.
Members shall be entitled to participate in activities organized by this Association and shall receive the various publications edited by this Association.
Article 14. (General Meeting)
The General Meeting shall be convened once a year in November. All decisions shall be made by a majority of votes of those present.
Article 15. (Fiscal Year)
The financial year of the Association shall begin on the first day of December every year and end on the last day of November of the next year.
Article 16. (Membership Dues)
All officers and members shall pay membership dues.
Article 17. (Income)
Expenses of the Association shall be derived from membership dues, donations, subsidies and other incomes.
Article 18. (Editorial Committee)
The President, Editorial Director and Research Director shall automatically be members of the Editorial committee. The Chairman of this committee shall be Editorial Director. Chairman may appoint several members. This committee shall be in charge of the following :
1. Reviewing and recommending articles for publication in the journal.
2. Matters concerning the editing and publishing of the journal.
3. Other matters relegated to the Editorial Committee.
Article 19. (Translation Committee)
The Translation Committee shall be in charge of translating Korean Buddhist classics into other languages. Members of this committee shall be appointed by the President.
Article 20. (Research Committee)
The Research Committee shall be in charge of the following :
1. Matters concerning the mid&long term research plan of the Association.
2. Matters concerning topic development of seminars and co-research projects.
3. Planning and editing of research product material.
Article 21. (International Exchange Committee)
The President, Public Relations Director and International Relations Director shall automatically be members of International Exchange Committee. Board of Directors shall appoint several members. The Chairman of this committee shall be the International Relations Director.
The International Exchange Committee shall be in charge of following :
1. Hosting and attendance at international seminars.
2. The exchange of international academic information.
3. Matters concerning other international exchanges.
Appendix
Article 22. (Amendment of rules) The rules of this Association may be amended at the General Meeting.
Article 23. (Application of common practices)
Details not mentioned by rules shall be dealt with in accordance with common practices adopted by other Associations.
