This gallery is an exhibition and celebration of the photos taken by Dr. Shin Dae-hyeon, a scholar of Buddhist art who has devoted his entire life to researching and conveying the beauty and historical value of Korean Buddhist temples and Cultural Heritages. After founding the Temple Culture Research Center in 1992, Dr. Shin would embark on research excursions across the country once every four days. Over a 13-year period, he spent time at more than 100 Buddhist temples. It is only at the temples do we find traditional Korean culture alive and well preserved. This is because, not only do we find Buddhist art but also such precious and intangible cultural activities and items invaluable to Korean culture in general as the Tea Ceremony, Yeongsan Grand Festival, and Palgwanhoe being continued at temples in Korea. That is why the temple is known as a culturally ecumenical space. Since 1992, the Temple Culture Research Center has performed field research, thoroughly taken photos and researched relevant documents on more than 900 temples across the country. Thanks to these conscientious efforts, materials and resources on Korean temples the center has gathered over the years have reached astounding amounts. Resources, however, are much more valuable when shared with others. It is mainly for this reason that the center is first exhibiting its photos with all of you, through its Gallery. There are, however, buildings, sculptures and paintings within these gallery walls that, presently, no longer exist at the temple in question, or have been altered to some degree. Before long, these photos are sure to become but historical vestiges of that which once remained. Temples, however, are much better experienced and directly seen for oneself. But for the busy modern urbanite, this is not an easy task. It is at times like these that past photographs of one’s trip to the temples help prove to be invaluable in reliving one’s memories. Also, for those who haven’t visited a particular temple, photographs can provide the person with important information ahead of time. If these photographs may help someone better understand Korean temple culture even a little, there is nothing more we can ask for. We will also continue to provide our viewers the pleasure of more and different photographs of different temples in the future. Thank you.
